Want to get recommended by ChatGPT when someone nearby asks for a business like yours? It is more achievable than most owners think, and this post shows you how.
Let’s start with the good news for a change. Yes, ChatGPT is now recommending local businesses. Yes, as of this month, it can pull real reviews, ratings, and photos straight into its answers, thanks to a fresh deal between Yelp and OpenAI. And yes, soon a customer will be able to ask it for a quote from you without ever leaving the chat.
Most people are reading that as a threat. I want to offer the other view: this is one of the most winnable moments a small business has had in years. The machines are handing out recommendations, and the good news is you can absolutely become one of the businesses they recommend. You have to understand what they’re actually looking for, which turns out to be delightfully undramatic.
Why this is a fight you can win
Here’s the thing that should cheer you up. You cannot bribe an AI. You cannot buy your way to the top of its answer; you cannot stuff it with keywords, and you cannot pull the sneaky tricks that used to game old-school search. It’s immune to all of it.
Which sounds like a problem until you realise it’s the opposite. It means the businesses that win aren’t the ones with the biggest budget or the cleverest hacks. They’re the ones that are genuinely good and genuinely easy to verify. For once, the machine is on the side of the business that just quietly does the work. Skynet, it turns out, has surprisingly wholesome taste.
What the AI is actually looking for
To get recommended, it helps to understand what the robot is doing when someone asks it “who’s a good [what you do] near me.” It isn’t judging your vibe. It’s scanning for signals that you exist, that you’re legitimate, and that real people rate you. Give it those clearly, and you make yourself the easy answer.
There are really only a handful of things it cares about, and none of them requires a computer science degree.
1. Make yourself impossible to miss
The AI can only recommend a business it can find and confirm. So the first job is to exist, loudly and consistently, everywhere it looks.
That means your business name, address, phone number, and what you actually do should be correct and identical across every platform you’re listed on. When the AI sees the same details lining up in five places, it reads that as trustworthy. When it sees your phone number three different ways and an address you left in 2022, it gets nervous and quietly recommends someone tidier. Consistency is boring. It’s also the whole game.
2. Feed the review machine, then actually talk to it
Reviews are the closest thing the AI has to a human whispering “yeah, they’re good.” It leans on them heavily, which makes them your single biggest lever.
So make getting reviews a habit rather than an afterthought, and ask happy customers while they’re still glowing. But here’s the part most people skip: reply to them. All of them, the shining and the scathing. A calm, helpful response to a bad review does more to win over the next reader than a hundred five-stars, because it shows a real business run by real people who care. The AI notices that pattern. So does everyone else reading over its shoulder.
3. Answer the questions people actually ask
AIs love content that plainly answers real questions, because that’s exactly what they’re trying to do too. Give them the raw material, and you make their job easy.
Think about what your customers genuinely ask before they buy. What does it cost? How fast can you come out? Do you cover my suburb? What happens if it goes wrong? Answer those questions in plain language on your website, the way you’d explain it to someone in person. You’re not writing for a search engine anymore; you’re writing for a machine that’s trying to be helpful, and helpful content is the thing it reaches for first.
4. Get mentioned by people who aren’t you
Anyone can say they’re the best. The AI knows that, so it weighs what other sources say about you more heavily than what you say about yourself.
Being mentioned around the web, in local directories, on community pages, by other businesses, in the odd bit of local press, all quietly builds the case that you’re a real and known quantity. You don’t need to go viral. You need to be the sort of business that turns up in enough trustworthy places that the AI concludes you’re the genuine article. Slow, unglamorous, and it works.
Do this first, before your competitors wake up.
Here’s the closest thing to a cheat code available: almost nobody is doing this yet. Most of your competitors haven’t noticed the ground has moved, and they’re still fighting over an old version of search that’s slowly going quiet. That’s your window.
Go and ask ChatGPT the exact question your customers would ask it. “Best [what you do] in [your area].” See who it names, and whether you’re in the room at all. That answer is your starting line. Then work through the four things above and verify again in a few months. The businesses that plant their flag now get to be the default answer while everyone else is still catching up.
The takeaway
The robots aren’t here to replace you. They’re here to recommend somebody, and it may as well be you. The wonderful part is that beating them doesn’t require trickery or a big budget. It requires being findable, being well reviewed, being genuinely helpful, and being talked about, which is really just a description of a good business that’s paying attention.
So no need to fear Skynet. Just be the answer it was always going to give. Turns out the winning move against the machines was to be excellent all along quietly. Anticlimactic, I know.
