Creating a YouTube Channel

·

Thinking about video for your business? Here is how to create a YouTube channel from scratch. Please note you will need a Google Account to use as the login for your channel. If you do not have one yet, you can set one up at accounts.google.com first.

Overview of the process

  1. Select Create a channel
  2. Set your picture, name, and handle
  3. Customise the channel
  4. Get the YouTube Studio app

Step 1: Select Create a channel

Sign in to YouTube, open your account settings, and select Create a channel. Any channels already linked to your Google Account appear alongside it.

Step 2: Set your picture, name, and handle

The profile picture is typically the logo that represents your business or channel. The name is what viewers see and can contain spaces. The handle makes up the link to your channel, so it cannot contain spaces, but you can use hyphens or dots between words. If your channel name is already taken, try adding .au to the handle. Once the fields are filled in, select Create channel.

Step 3: Customise the channel

Once the channel is created, you can customise how it looks, including the banner image and the channel description, using the Customise channel button.

Step 4: Get the YouTube Studio app

We recommend downloading the YouTube Studio app from your phone app store (Google Play or the Apple App Store) to manage uploading videos and to keep an eye on comments and analytics from your phone.

Quick tips

  • Use your logo as the profile picture so viewers recognise your brand
  • Keep the handle short and close to your business name, since it becomes your channel link
  • Write the channel description with the words your customers would search for
  • Add a banner image sized for both desktop and mobile, and we can help design one if needed
